Fuel storage system, fuel transport and fuel injection applications require sealing materials that can resist harsh new fuels and high engine temperatures. This is especially true for hybrid vehicles, where fuel sits longer. Today’s fuel hoses have higher elongation requirements, and need strong multilayer bonding to thermoplastic barrier layers.

Sender seals
Capped or capless filler seals and fuel injector seals
Today’s smaller, hotter engines, extended lifetime warranty periods and aggressive fuels place enormous demands on the seals and gaskets of internal combustion engines, drivelines, exhaust and air intake systems. 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoroelastomers offer high resistance to heat, chemicals, water and steam, enabling longer seal life. Among other applications, these durable materials are used for MLS gaskets with excellent metal bonding, static seals with high retained sealing force, and dynamic seals.

Efficient containment of exhaust gas has never been more critical – both for the environment and for compliance with emission requirements. The air intake system, including turbocharger hoses and seals, requires materials that can reliably stand up to the demands of exhaust gas recirculation. 3M offers peroxide cure FKM grades with strong resistance to different compositions of acidic EGR gases, to help you meet emerging challenges.

Hotter operating temperatures, extended service life requirements, and the increasing use of organic acid technology (OAT) additives demand resilient sealing materials like fluoroelastomers. 3M conducted compression stress relaxation (CSR) testing after heat aging in coolant, with and without OAT additives, to measure the effects on material properties.
Results show that high-performance peroxide curable FKM products are poised to meet the demanding challenges of automotive coolant environments.
