Our conformable yet tight-bonding 3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes (AFT) are great examples of our solutions in automotive sealing for OEMs. Look closer and you’ll find even more: adhesives that cure under OEM heating processes, adhesives formulated specifically for use on gasket and weatherstrip materials, primerless attachment tapes and the reduced-density benefits of 3M™ Glass Bubbles. Explore our expanding range of sealing tapes and technologies below.
3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes and Acrylic Plus Foam Tapes are go-to solutions for automotive sealing. These tapes have been developed specifically for attaching exterior trim and other parts to automotive paint surfaces. Conformable, viscoelastic foam cores provide excellent stress relaxation under high application loads and maintain tight bond lines under normal conditions. These viscoelastic properties allow the tapes to compensate for tolerances, provide uniform force distribution and help balance out thermal expansion – all critical for maintaining reliable seals.
3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes and Acrylic Plus Foam Tapes feature conformable, viscoelastic foam cores for stress relaxation under high application loads and maintain tight bond lines under normal conditions. These tapes have been developed specifically for attaching exterior trim and other parts to automotive paint surfaces and are ideal for trim attachment to glass. Their viscoelastic properties help absorb vibrations, provide uniform force distribution and help balance out thermal expansions, all suitable for maintaining seals between parts and glass.
Our 3M™ Acrylic Foam Tape and 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes can really save time in sealing applications – their liner-side adhesives are pressure sensitive and easy to apply to a range of automotive substrates. Their non-liner-side adhesives are available heat-activated to cure under standard OEM processes without extra process steps. Conformable, viscoelastic foam cores provide stress relaxation under high application loads and maintain tight bond lines under normal conditions. These tapes have been developed specifically for bonding to ethylene propylene diene monomer/thermoplastic elastomers (EPDM/TPE) and many Santoprene® thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) materials.
Formulated specifically for use with 3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes and 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes, our adhesion promoters improve the adhesion of automotive tape to a wide range of common automotive trim and part materials, including LSE plastics. They can be applied by gravity feed wipe, knurled roller, sprayer or felt-tipped or similar applicator, and they can be cleaned from most surfaces with common acetate solvent. They accept tape immediately after drying (typically less than 90 seconds).
Our cross-industry expertise allows 3M to provide advanced material technology to automotive OEMs and Tier suppliers. 3M™ Glass Bubbles are microscopic, hollow glass microspheres that feature an extremely high strength-to-density ratio. This material is supplied as a polymer additive that can replace heavier materials without sacrificing the integrity of the component. In fact, it can reduce density in plastics, composites and coatings by up to 50%. 3M™ Glass Bubbles can be used in injection molded parts and sheet molded composites (SMCs), ideal for lightweight door panels hoods and trunk lids. They are also commonly used in seam sealing and underbody coatings.
