Solutions for More Streamlined Assembly

Within every 3M product that bonds, fastens and protects is at least one solution that helps reduce or eliminate process steps, limit rework, reduce waste and more during critical assembly processes. Learn more below.

  • Fastener Adhesives image
    Fastener Adhesives

A solution within a solution: 3M™ Fastener Adhesives add two-part structural adhesive strength to threaded fasteners without the need for mixing. They feature an epoxy resin suspended in microcapsules within a hardener. The normal shear force from installing threaded fasteners crushes these tiny capsules, releasing the resin and causing a chemical reaction that locks the parts together. These adhesives provide consistent and predictable torque values and do not require heat or primers for curing.

    • 3M™ Fastener Adhesive 2353/2353Y
Typically used for adding structural strength for fasteners on safety-related parts, 3M™ Fastener Adhesive 2353 (blue) and 2353Y (yellow) are designed for use under service temperatures up to 116°C (240°F).
    • 3M™ Fastener Adhesive 2510/2510N
Excellent for adding structural strength for fasteners in engine compartments and on safety-related parts, 3M™ Fastener Adhesive 2510 (orange) and 2210N (neutral) can withstand service temperatures as high as 177°C (350°F).

  • Friction Shims image
    3M™ Friction Shims

Our 3M™ Friction Shims help answer the demand for maximum power density – enhancing friction to transmit higher loads while enabling lightweight designs. This technology is ideal for steering and chassis designs that meet specifications for weight, torque, power density and efficiency of assembly. 3M™ Friction Shims reliably transmit up to 4X higher torque than conventional systems, without requiring modifications to joint design.

  • structural-Adhesives Liquids image
    Structural Adhesive Liquids

Our structural adhesive liquids can be applied at the Tier or OEM. They are heat-cured for hem bonding, crash-resistant bonding and replacement of mechanical fasteners in many applications. Many are formulated for longer storage and lower cure temperatures (room temperature to induction curing as low as 80°C), ideal for bonding materials like carbon fiber without distortion or resin degradation. Many substructures can be stored for weeks before final heat curing. 3M Structural Adhesive Liquids are compatible with many wet and dry lubes.

Many of our two-part epoxy structural adhesives are available in Duo-Pak cartridge and bulk containers and can be applied with 3M application equipment that allows for precise, consistent mix ratios and minimal product waste.

    • 3M™ Structural Adhesive SA9820
Formulated for increased design flexibility in automotive OEM applications, this two-part epoxy adhesive is ideal for bonding carbon composites. It cures at low temperatures and can achieve the same mechanical performance of 1K, even on oily metals. Bonded substructures can be stored up to two months before full e-coat/paint cycle curing.
    • 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP420
Toughened for impact and fatigue resistance, this two-part epoxy adhesive is ideal for panel bonding and structural bonding in OEM assembly. It can withstand paint bake operations up to 400°F for 60 minutes, mixes at 2:1 and affords a working time of 20 minutes. It reaches full cure in approximately 24 hours at 72°F/22°C.
    • 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ DP490
This toughened, two-part epoxy provides good strength along with high impact and fatigue resistance. The mix ratio is 2:1 and provides a 20-minute work life, allowing time to adjust for desired fit prior to curing. It can withstand paint bake operations up to 400°F for 60 minutes.

  • structural-Adhesives Tapes image
    Structural Adhesive Tapes

The power of 3M structural adhesives in a tape format makes for added precision where clean, complete application is critical and where corrosion is a main concern. These structural adhesive tapes improve quality by reducing variability of application and can bond to a variety of metal substrates. They also expand during cure to fill gaps, which can help reduce warranty claims in some applications. Structural adhesive tapes are ideal for efficient processing and assembly, especially for bonding long, thin areas where the use of spot welds or mechanical fasteners has traditionally required extra time and labor.

    • 3M™ Structural Adhesive Tape SAT1010
3M™ Structural Adhesive Tape SAT1010 is ideal for structural bonding strength, sealing and isolation between dissimilar materials. It features an expanding, structural epoxy formulated for steel and aluminum parts. The tape expands and cures in e-coat cure ovens and can fill small gaps where tolerances would otherwise be an issue. It provides an alternative to clinching and provides clean, repeatable application without the variability of many liquid adhesives, eliminating the potential for parts to move before cure.

  • Paint protection films image
    Paint Protection Films

Approved by multiple OEMs, 3M™ Paint Protection Films begin delivering benefits well before paint. Flexible, die-cuttable and available pre-masked, these films provide reliable corrosion protection between metal parts. They feature pressure-sensitive adhesives for efficiency during assembly.

    • 3M™ Paint Protection Film 8591, 14 mil, Transparent
This transparent adhesive film features a 12 mil die-cuttable polyurethane base. It has been tested for resistance to weathering, stains, shrinkage and elongation, and has 2 mil acrylic adhesive. Supplied without a clear coat, 8591 is ideal as a hose wrap, metal separator or body hole filler.
